President Lee defends controversial pig eye remark
President Lee has responded to criticisms regarding his recent use of the phrase, “In the eyes of a pig, only pigs are seen,” which sparked controversy over its perceived lack of dignity. The President addressed the backlash on social media, arguing that the criticism stems from a preference for classical Chinese characters over Korean expressions to convey authority.
Lee shared a classical Chinese proverb, “豚眼只有豚 佛眼只有佛,” explaining it as a profound Zen dialogue between Muhak Daesa and King Yi Seong-gye. He questioned why using Korean words like “pig” or “cow” is viewed as undignified while the same meanings expressed in Chinese characters are accepted. He emphasized that the dignity of speech comes from the depth of insight rather than the specific characters used.
The controversy began after Lee used the expression to defend his frequent overseas trips against criticisms that they resembled leisure travel. The People Power Party criticized the remark, accusing the President of arrogance for allegedly comparing citizens to pigs when they raise legitimate questions about his administration.
