President Lee emphasizes national responsibility for public safety
Ahead of the fourth anniversary of the Itaewon tragedy, President Lee addressed the National Life and Safety Committee, stating that there is no value more important than protecting the lives and safety of citizens. He emphasized that the government must reflect on whether it has adequately protected victims and prevented avoidable deaths.
President Lee highlighted the upcoming implementation of the Basic Act on Life and Safety in December, which establishes the right to safety as a fundamental constitutional right. He instructed government agencies to prepare follow-up systems to ensure the law effectively protects lives rather than just creating administrative measures.
In a separate cabinet meeting, the President called for the construction of a comprehensive safety net to protect citizens from natural disasters, industrial accidents, and violent crimes, asserting that public safety is the primary duty and reason for the state's existence.
