South Korea proposes 820.9 trillion won budget for 2027

President Lee Jae-myung delivered a policy speech at the National Assembly to outline the 2027 government budget, which is set at 820.9 trillion won, a 12.8% increase from the previous year. The budget focuses on three core principles: bold investment without waste, prioritizing fiscal spending over tax expenditures, and favoring regional development to ensure balanced national growth.

A significant portion of the budget, 21.3 trillion won, is allocated to the AI and semiconductor sectors through three mega-projects involving physical AI, AI data centers, and semiconductor production infrastructure. Additionally, the government plans to establish a Future Response Fund to invest additional tax revenue into four key pillars: youth, future growth engines, regional development, and education and talent.

To address social inequality, the budget includes 30 trillion won for housing supply support, including 218,000 public housing units. The government also aims to expand the rural basic income pilot program to 35 more counties to combat regional extinction. Other social measures include increasing the median income by 6.7% and transitioning social security benefits from an application-based system to an automatic system to ensure broader coverage for the vulnerable.
