South Korean President pledges 700 billion won for rural support fund
President Lee Jae-myung announced plans to bolster support for rural areas by injecting 700 billion won into the Agricultural Coexistence Fund to reach a 1 trillion won target. This initiative aims to compensate farmers for sacrifices made during market liberalization and FTA processes, while also addressing regional decline and the concentration of resources in the capital region.
In related agricultural policy, Minister of Agriculture Song Mi-ryung stated that discussions regarding joining the CPTPP will be re-examined from the beginning to ensure sufficient safeguards for the agricultural sector. The Ministry also plans to expand the rural basic income program to 35 counties next year and implement measures to stabilize rice prices.
During a cabinet meeting, the President also addressed the upcoming national audit, urging the government to accept constructive criticism while calling on the National Assembly to avoid baseless fake news. Additionally, the President emphasized the need for advanced cybersecurity measures to counter sophisticated AI-driven hacking threats and suggested developing systems to support solar power projects on farmland to boost rural income.
