South Korea's Lee calls for peace regime and North Korean dialogue
During a speech marking the 81st anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung called for renewed dialogue with North Korea to replace the current armistice with a formal peace regime. Lee proposed a three-part blueprint for peace: inclusive coexistence through mutual respect, stable peace maintained by multi-layered security safeguards to prevent escalation, and contributing to global peace and a nuclear-free world.
Lee emphasized that discussions could include effective measures to curb North Korea’s nuclear capabilities. He expressed a desire to transform regional hostility into a driver for shared prosperity and coexistence. Despite these calls, relations with Pyongyang remain frozen, as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has previously described the South as a hostile state and rejected reunification policies.
Regarding relations with Japan, President Lee advocated for pragmatic diplomacy focused on national interests. He noted that the two nations have strengthened cooperation in supply chains, energy, and advanced industries over the past year. While calling for a forward-looking relationship to address shared challenges, he also reaffirmed the government's commitment to historical accountability, including the investigation and reclamation of assets illegally accumulated by pro-Japanese collaborators.
