President Lee seeks Trump's help to restart North Korea talks

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung met with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly to request assistance in reviving stalled dialogue between the United States and North Korea. During the unannounced 30-minute meeting, Lee sought a breakthrough to facilitate communication between the two Koreas, while both leaders agreed to coordinate as “peacemakers and pacemakers.”

While Trump has signaled a desire to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, potentially during the APEC summit in China this November, North Korea has maintained a complex stance. Kim Yo Jong, sister of Kim Jong Un, described the relationship between Trump and Kim as “excellent” but insisted that Washington’s hostile policies remain unchanged. She also dismissed recent reductions in South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises.

Domestic challenges in South Korea, including controversies regarding North Korean prisoners of war and a suspected land mine explosion in the DMZ, have complicated Lee’s peace initiatives. Experts suggest that Pyongyang may prioritize direct negotiations with the United States over improving relations with Seoul, noting that North Korea appears focused on engaging with President Trump.
