President Lula mocks Senator Ciro Nogueira over Piauí election loss

During a political event on Avenida Paulista, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva mocked Senator Ciro Nogueira regarding his recent electoral performance in Piauí. Lula claimed that the re-election of Governor Rafael Fonteles, who secured 70.9% of the vote, had “buried” Nogueira’s political career.

Nogueira, the president of the Progressistas (PP) party, finished third in the race for the Senate in Piauí with 24% of the vote. In response to the President's remarks, Nogueira posted on social media that a minister had called him to apologize, suggesting the President's comments were due to a “principle of sclerosis.”

Despite the loss in Piauí, Nogueira maintains his leadership of the Progressistas and his influence within the “Centrão,” a powerful bloc of political parties in Brasília. The exchange highlights ongoing tensions between the current administration and key legislative leaders.
