President Mahama holds diplomatic and economic talks at UNGA

During the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, President John Dramani Mahama engaged in several high-level diplomatic and economic discussions. He met with Boeing executives to discuss a strategic aviation partnership aimed at reviving Ghana’s national airline and establishing a regional maintenance and repair hub in West Africa. Additionally, Mahama held bilateral talks with Suriname’s President, Dr. Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, to strengthen economic cooperation, particularly in the gold sector and education.

Addressing the Ghanaian diaspora, Mahama clarified his stance on illegal mining (galamsey), denying claims that he promised to declare a state of emergency. He argued that such a measure is a last resort and impractical given that illegal mining affects approximately 10 regions simultaneously. He also addressed social media criticism, stating that personal insults do not distract him from his duties, while calling for a national forum to discuss the regulation of online content.

In his UN address, Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s economic recovery must improve the daily lives of citizens through his ‘Resetting Ghana Agenda.’ He highlighted initiatives such as the Big Push Programme for infrastructure, the 24-Hour Economy, and the Free Primary Health Care Programme, which aims for nationwide coverage by 2028.
