President Mahama sets 2027 deadline for Wa-Han road project

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government’s flagship infrastructure initiative, the Big Push programme, will be implemented in phases due to budgetary constraints. During his ‘Resetting Ghana Tour’ in the Upper West Region, Mahama explained that the administration cannot address all road infrastructure needs simultaneously because of a hard budget ceiling.

The phased strategy prioritizes major trunk roads, specifically those connecting regional capitals, before addressing feeder roads that link smaller communities to the main network. Phase 1 of the programme is currently underway, with Phase 2 in the scoping stage and Phase 3 planned for the future.

As part of this rollout, Mahama set a completion deadline of late 2027 for the Wa-Han road project. This route connects Wa in the Upper West Region to Han, with the ultimate goal of linking to Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region. The President expressed confidence in the current construction quality and stated he intends to return to the region next year to commission the completed road.
