President Mahama urges Newmont to expand support for Ahafo communities
President John Dramani Mahama has called on the mining company Newmont to expand its corporate social responsibility initiatives in the Ahafo Region. The request was made following a meeting with the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, led by President Nana Barima Twereku Ampem III, at the Presidency in Accra.
The chiefs raised concerns regarding the impact of mining operations on local development and emphasized that companies should invest more heavily in the communities from which they extract resources. While acknowledging Newmont’s previous contributions, such as road construction and the completion of the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs building, President Mahama stated that there is significant scope for increased support.
“I believe there is much more Newmont can do for the benefit of the mining communities,” the President said, noting that mining communities should benefit directly from the resources extracted from their lands. He assured the traditional authorities that the government would continue to collaborate with stakeholders to advance regional development.
