President Mattarella condemns violent riots in Milan
Italian President Sergio Mattarella has condemned the violence following weekend riots in Milan, expressing full solidarity with security forces. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 39th National Assembly of Italian Provinces, Mattarella stated that any form of violence in municipalities and cities is “inacceptable.”
He noted that the unrest involved “new types of actors” and called for an in-depth analysis and vigilant monitoring to combat such violence. Prosecutors in the Lombardy region described the disturbances as exhibiting a “rare violence” carried out primarily by young adults.
During the unrest, objects such as trash cans and paving stones were thrown at security forces. Authorities reported that approximately 160 people, mostly young adults including minors, were detained following the incidents.
