Amatrice hosts national school year inauguration amid safety concerns

The 2026-2027 Italian school year was inaugurated with a national ceremony in Amatrice, attended by President Sergio Mattarella and Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara. The choice of location held deep symbolic weight, marking the tenth anniversary of the 2016 earthquake that devastated the region. The event emphasized the role of schools as vital social hubs for community reconstruction and the future of internal areas.

However, the commencement of the school year has highlighted significant safety concerns regarding Italy's educational infrastructure. Data indicates that 90% of schools lack at least one of the five legally required safety certifications. Furthermore, only 53.3% of school buildings possess a certificate of structural suitability, and a mere 12.7% are equipped with specific anti-seismic projects.

In other regions, efforts to modernize school facilities continue. In Potenza, the Province has completed 4.4 million euros worth of seismic upgrades and canteen renovations for the Istituto Alberghiero Di Pasca and Convitto Nazionale Salvator Rosa, funded by the PNRR. Meanwhile, health organizations have issued reminders to families regarding the management of asthma and allergies during the return to classrooms.
