Sergio Mattarella visits Grosseto hospital to honor Codice Rosa protocol
Italian President Sergio Mattarella visited the Misericordia Hospital in Grosseto to inspect the ‘Stanza Rosa’ (Pink Room), a specialized emergency department space dedicated to victims of abuse and violence. During the visit, Mattarella emphasized that violence against women is a primary emergency for the country and praised the integrated approach of the ‘Codice Rosa’ (Pink Code) protocol.
Originally conceived in 2009 by Dr. Vittoria Doretti at the Grosseto hospital, the Codice Rosa has evolved from a local Tuscan initiative into a national model. The protocol provides a protected pathway for women, children, the elderly, and vulnerable individuals, ensuring medical care alongside psychological, legal, and social support. The system coordinates healthcare professionals, law enforcement, and the judiciary to protect victims and preserve evidence.
Mattarella expressed gratitude to the healthcare workers and pioneers of the project, noting that the initiative has become a vital national asset for addressing gender-based violence and hate crimes.
