Croatia opposition seeks no-confidence vote over Gospić waste crisis
The political landscape in Croatia is facing significant tension as opposition parties respond to an environmental crisis in the Lika region. The SDP has officially initiated a vote of no confidence against Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, citing the government's failure to address the illegal disposal of hazardous waste in Gospić.
Opposition MP Marija Selak Raspudić has formally called on President Zoran Milanović to convene an extraordinary session of the Croatian Parliament. She cited a report from the State Attorney's Office (DORH) warning that soil and water in the Lika area have been contaminated to a degree that poses a serious health threat to citizens. The opposition is demanding an immediate remediation plan, secured funding, and strict deadlines for cleanup.
Further complicating the issue, MEP Gordan Bosanac reported that residents near the disposal sites have undergone testing in Brussels for PFAS (forever chemicals) exposure. There are also claims that the toxic waste originated from Italy and Slovenia. While some political actors are calling for a unified opposition front to address this national security and health issue, others, such as the Most party, have expressed reluctance to join the broader opposition coalition.
