President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir urges U.S. to simplify visa bond system

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called on the United States to review and simplify the existing ‘visa bond’ system to facilitate travel for Bangladeshi businesspeople and genuine tourists. During a meeting with U.S. Ambassador Brent Christensen at Bangabhaban on Wednesday, the President emphasized the need for increased American investment and cooperation in Bangladesh's agricultural sector, citing past support for rice and agricultural research institutes.

The President also highlighted the significant role of the American company Chevron in the country's energy sector and urged further U.S. investment in power and fuel. He identified several high-potential areas for technology and skill transfer, including information technology, infrastructure, healthcare, and high-tech industries.

Regarding regional stability, the President requested continued U.S. assistance in ensuring the safe, dignified, and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees to their home country. Ambassador Christensen expressed interest in deepening the multidimensional relationship between Dhaka and Washington and assured continued support. The President concluded by noting that Bangladesh seeks to expand bilateral and multilateral cooperation based on principles of sovereignty, national interest, and mutual respect.
