President Mnangagwa praises businessman Wicknell Chivayo
Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has publicly praised businessman Wicknell Chivayo, describing him as a philanthropist and urging him to continue gifting members of the community. Speaking at an event in Harare, Mnangagwa encouraged Chivayo to ‘stay in that lane,’ noting that his contributions are appreciated.
Chivayo has gained notoriety for his high-profile lifestyle and his habit of gifting luxury vehicles, cash, and high-end goods to various prominent figures, including musicians and religious leaders. This practice has drawn scrutiny due to the contrast between Chivayo’s wealth and the economic reality of many Zimbabweans. While some officials have previously used slang to suggest corruption, Mnangagwa has defended Chivayo, challenging critics to provide evidence to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission.
The complexities of Chivayo’s gifting culture were highlighted when musician Enzo Ishall reportedly sold a luxury vehicle gifted by Chivayo for US$60,000, significantly less than its reported purchase price of approximately US$145,000. Chivayo noted that the sale was reportedly due to the high costs associated with maintaining such a vehicle.
