President Mohamed Muizzu receives PNC 2028 presidential ticket

The People’s National Congress (PNC), the largest political party in the Maldives, has formally awarded its 2028 presidential ticket to President Mohamed Muizzu. The decision was made during the party’s National Congress, where a resolution to bypass the internal primary process was unanimously approved by 1,119 members present.

The move follows Article 88 of the PNC constitution, which allows a sitting president who is a party member to receive the presidential ticket without a primary if they intend to seek a second term. The ticket was officially presented to President Muizzu by PNC Chairperson and Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla during a closing ceremony at the Social Centre in Malé.

The party cited Muizzu’s administration achievements—including policies on national sovereignty, maritime monitoring, and economic stability—as justification for the endorsement. Muizzu, who assumed office in November 2023, is expected to seek a second five-year term in the 2028 election.
