President Murmu predicts India self-reliance before 2047

President Droupadi Murmu stated that India could achieve self-reliance before 2047, driven by the growing economic empowerment of rural women through Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Speaking at the inauguration of the National SARAS Mela in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, she noted that rural women have transitioned from being mere beneficiaries of government schemes to becoming active wealth creators and drivers of development.

The President highlighted that the number of women associated with SHGs has increased to over 10 crore in approximately 12 years. She encouraged a shift in focus from the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ initiative toward developing ‘Crorepati Didis’ to help women expand their businesses and increase earnings.

The National SARAS Mela, organized by the Union Ministry of Rural Development and the Andhra Pradesh government, provides a platform for rural artisans and women-led groups to market their products. President Murmu announced that these melas will henceforth be organized annually in different states to provide greater opportunities for women entrepreneurs.
