President Museveni meets Commonwealth Secretary-General
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni met with Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey at State House Entebbe to discuss African unity and economic development.
During the meeting, President Museveni advocated for greater continental integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He advised against African nations clustering based on former colonial associations, suggesting instead that partnerships should be guided by the continent's broader interests and a united African front.
President Museveni expressed support for two specific Commonwealth proposals: a climate fund to assist in developing alternative energy sources—such as solar, hydro, and nuclear power—and a youth aspiration fund aimed at skilling Africa’s large young population to support socio-economic transformation.
Ms. Botchwey commended the President’s focus on self-reliance and noted that Africa must play a central role in shaping the future of the Commonwealth.
