President Nausėda defends appointment of L. Meškauskaitė to LRT Council

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has defended the appointment of lawyer L. Meškauskaitė to the Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT) Council. Meškauskaitė replaces Giedrius Jucevičius, who resigned.

In an interview with Žinių radijas, Nausėda emphasized the need for the council to consist of independent individuals representing diverse perspectives rather than a single political ideology. He described Meškauskaitė as a rare professional legal expert with specific experience in the media sector.

The appointment has faced criticism from members of the opposition and parts of the journalistic community, who have labeled the move as politicized. Nausėda rejected attempts to link Meškauskaitė to specific political forces, noting her previous legal work for Vytautas Landsbergius. He stated that council members should act according to their conscience to help the public broadcaster implement strategy and provide quality content.
