Luca Niculescu nominated as Romania's Prime Minister candidate

President Nicușor Dan has nominated diplomat and former journalist Luca Niculescu as the candidate for Prime Minister of Romania. This marks the fourth attempt to form a government following the dismissal of Ilie Bolojan’s cabinet via a motion of censure in May 2026.

Niculescu, 55, has served as a State Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as the national coordinator for Romania’s OECD accession process since 2022. President Dan cited Niculescu’s diplomatic expertise as a key reason for his selection, noting his ability to harmonize different positions. Niculescu has been given 10 days to form a cabinet and present a governing program to Parliament.

The nomination faces significant political hurdles. While Niculescu has the freedom to propose either a political or technocratic government, major parties have expressed skepticism regarding parliamentary support. The PSD has criticized the move, stating it defies parliamentary mathematics, while the USR has maintained its refusal to collaborate with the PSD. The AUR party has stated it will not vote for a cabinet led by Niculescu, and the PNL is awaiting the presentation of the proposed team and program before deciding its stance.
