President Petr Pavel accuses Foreign Minister Macinka of extortion

Czech President Petr Pavel has accused Foreign Minister Petr Macinka of attempted extortion. The President claims Macinka sent text messages through an advisor, suggesting that political peace could be achieved if certain candidates, specifically Filip Turek, were appointed to the Ministry of the Environment.

The presidential office has submitted a motion to the police for investigation. The National Headquarters Against Organized Crime is expected to handle the case due to the involvement of a constitutional official. Macinka has defended his position, criticizing the President's approach to government appointments as being outside the constitutional framework.

Following a period of heightened tension between the presidency and the government, a meeting is scheduled for Monday at Prague Castle between President Pavel and Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. Foreign Minister Macinka will not attend this meeting, following an agreement with the Prime Minister. The discussion is intended to coordinate foreign policy, particularly regarding the President's upcoming trip to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Macinka and Pavel are expected to meet later in the week during a visit by King Abdullah II of Jordan.
