President Petr Pavel meets with Konicko mayors over budget and road concerns

President Petr Pavel visited the Konicko microregion to participate in the opening of the school year at the T. G. Masaryk school in Brodku u Konice. Following the ceremony, the President met with mayors from 19 municipalities representing nearly 10,000 residents.

Local leaders, including Konice Mayor Michal Obrusník, sought to discuss critical regional issues with the President, specifically regarding the state's tax allocation system. Mayors expressed concern that current formulas do not adequately cover the higher costs faced by small, remote municipalities for maintaining infrastructure and essential services. They noted that without subsidies, they struggle to maintain property.

Additionally, the mayors raised concerns regarding Prime Minister Andrej Babiš's intention to withhold funds from the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure for the repair of second and third-class roads next year. Local officials described this potential lack of funding as a “brutal blow” to regional development, particularly in the Olomouc Region where road conditions are already significantly neglected.
