President Prabowo orders BRIN to develop affordable drug detection tools

President Prabowo Subianto has instructed the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to research the development of affordable early detection tools for drug addiction. This directive was issued during a limited meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on September 29, 2026, aimed at strengthening narcotics prevention and handling.

Arif Satria, Head of BRIN, stated that the agency will also work to improve the quality and quantity of drug rehabilitation centers through research into various rehabilitation methods. The government's focus is on protecting future generations from the impacts of narcotics abuse.

Additionally, BRIN identified the use of vapes as a potential loophole for drug distribution. Satria noted that BRIN testing indicates vaping has significant health risks, including impacts on the lungs, pancreas, and issues related to diabetes. BRIN plans to coordinate with the Ministry of Health and the National Narcotics Board to address these concerns.
