President Prabowo orders Trans‑Sumatra and Trans‑Kalimantan rail projects
On 30 July 2026 President Prabowo Subianto instructed state‑owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) and Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi to build the Trans‑Sumatra railway, a strategic line that will link Bakauheni in the far south of Sumatra to the island’s northernmost region, Aceh. He also directed the start of a Trans‑Kalimantan railway, stating that the two projects could be pursued simultaneously: “After Trans‑Sumatra is finished, we will move to Trans‑Kalimantan. If possible, we will start at the same time.”
During the same ceremony the president inaugurated the first phase of renovations at the heritage Semarang Tawang Station in Central Java. He asked KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin and Minister Purwagandhi to confirm their readiness, both of whom affirmed they could carry out the projects. The revitalisation of railway stations, including hundreds of historic sites, was highlighted as a way to strengthen tourism and support Indonesia’s broader national transformation.
