President Prabowo Subianto Targets Housing Shortage and Building Safety in Indonesia

President Prabowo Subianto said the Indonesian government is evaluating new approaches to close a backlog of roughly 9.9 million homes, citing India’s achievement of constructing about 40 million houses in 12 years – roughly three million a year. He discussed these plans while attending a mass allocation of 62,000 subsidised home‑ownership loans worth Rp 880 billion in Batang, Central Java.

At a separate ceremony in Semarang, Prabowo warned that cheap zinc‑coated steel roofing corrodes quickly and can cause respiratory illness. He linked building quality to tourism appeal and urged local leaders to prioritize waste‑free streets, clean rivers, and reforestation, framing environmental stewardship as essential for Indonesia’s tourism‑driven economy.
