President Prabowo Subianto urged to retract ‘Londo Ireng’ remark by Malang journalists

Four journalist organisations – Persatuan Wartawan Indonesia (PWI) Malang Raya, Ikatan Jurnalis Televisi Indonesia (IJTI) Korda Malang, Pewarta Foto Indonesia (PFI) Malang and Aliansi Jurnalis Independen (AJI) Malang – held a peaceful rally at Bundaran Tugu in Malang on 27 July 2026. The demonstration was a response to President Prabowo Subianto’s comment describing reporters as “Londo Ireng”, a term the participants said likens journalists to colonial oppressors.

Speakers demanded that the president publicly withdraw the statement and apologise, arguing the remark undermines the dignity, independence and constitutional role of the press. AJI Malang chair Benni Indo, IJTI Korda Malang chair Hilda Daningtyas and PWI Malang Raya chair Ir. Cahyono all stressed that the press is a pillar of democracy and should not be stigmatised.
