Tanjung Puting National Park fires prompt Prabowo to deploy pumps and funds

President Prabowo Subianto has ordered urgent measures to combat forest and land fires in Indonesia, with a primary focus on the Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Kalimantan. Reports from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) indicate that approximately 513.89 hectares of the conservation area have been affected by fires. The swampy terrain in the region has made the fire hotspots difficult to reach by vehicle, and thick smoke has hindered aerial firefighting operations.

To support ground crews, President Prabowo has allocated Rp2 billion to create 200 water drilling points and ordered the dispatch of 200 water pumps. He also emphasized the need for long-term prevention, calling for mitigation strategies to be implemented at the village level.

Furthermore, the President announced plans to significantly expand the forest police force, aiming to increase the number of personnel to 70,000 to improve forest surveillance and protection. He has requested that the National Police (Polri) assist in the training and education of these personnel.
