Bolivia faces political crisis amid economic instability

Bolivia is facing escalating political and economic instability under President Rodrigo Paz Pereira. The administration is under significant pressure as his governing party, the Democratic Christian Party (PDC), has withdrawn support due to the ongoing economic crisis and lack of results. Public disapproval has reportedly risen to 65%.

Key tensions include the potential extension of the state of exception. Former President Jorge “Tuto” Quiroga has demanded that the Executive branch report to the Plurinational Legislative Assembly regarding the effectiveness of current measures before any extension is considered. Simultaneously, the National Congress of Free Transport has rejected an extension of the state of exception, citing concerns that it could be used to control social protests. The transport sector is also demanding the repeal of Decree 5676, which increased diesel prices.

In the region of Santa Cruz, the Departmental Legislative Assembly has promulgated an “Anti-Blockade Law.” The Comité Pro Santa Cruz has threatened organized mobilizations and “de facto autonomy” if government demands are not met by October 10. Meanwhile, President Paz continues official duties, including attending commemorative acts in Cochabamba, even as controversies surround the international role of certain government advisors.
