António José Seguro calls for investment in Portugal’s interior
Portuguese President António José Seguro has called for increased state attention and investment in the country’s interior and border territories to promote national cohesion. Speaking in Vila Nova de Cerveira, Viana do Castelo, Seguro highlighted the critical challenges facing these regions, specifically aging populations, depopulation, and their distance from central decision-making hubs.
During his visit to the 24th edition of the Bienal Internacional de Arte (BIAC), the President emphasized that a cohesive nation is measured by the vitality of its territories rather than the strength of its capitals. He urged the central government to place more trust in local municipalities, noting that they possess the best understanding of their citizens' needs. Seguro also praised the Bienal as a significant cultural institution that thrives outside of dominant urban circuits, serving as a vital link for art and community identity.
