President Sergio Mattarella urges civility and EU reform at Ventaglio ceremony
At the Quirinale, President Sergio Mattarella delivered the traditional Ventaglio to the press corps. In his speech he warned against premature electoral tensions and called on all parties to abandon aggressive, campaign‑style rhetoric, stressing that such tones distract from everyday problems faced by citizens.
Mattarella emphasized respect for the law and the judiciary, condemned political violence as a threat to democracy, and highlighted the need to modernise the multilateral system through a stronger European Union. He cited recent free‑trade agreements with Canada, Japan, South America and India as examples of cooperative alternatives to commercial or military confrontation. The president also recalled the 2022 failure to launch a new European Convention, urging renewed effort to reform EU treaties for today’s challenges.
