President Sheinbaum meets with designer Elvis Guerra regarding Oaxaca attacks
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch met with Zapotec textile designer and poet Elvis Guerra at Palacio Nacional on Wednesday. The meeting follows an armed attack on Guerra’s residence in Juchitán de Zaragoza, Oaxaca, on September 18.
Guerra reported that the attack was accompanied by previous threats and alleged extortion attempts. The Oaxaca State Attorney General's Office has identified suspects and is investigating extortion as a primary motive. During the meeting, Guerra emphasized that her plea for justice extends beyond her personal case to address the broader security crisis affecting the entire community of Juchitán.
President Sheinbaum confirmed that Guerra is under protection and pledged that there would be no impunity. She noted that security measures must address the systemic issues in the municipality. Additionally, the meeting occurred alongside news of the detention of Juchitán Mayor Miguel Sánchez Altamirano in an investigation related to alleged extortion and crimes against state security.
