President Sheinbaum proposes renaming Paso de Cortés

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has proposed renaming the Paso de Cortés, a mountain pass located between the Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl volcanoes, to ‘Paso de los Pueblos Indígenas’. The proposal aims to recognize the historical importance of indigenous peoples in the country.

Alejandro Armenta Mier, the Governor of Puebla, expressed his full support for the initiative, describing it as a way to vindicate the role of original peoples in national history. While supporting the change, Armenta Mier noted that the official modification remains the authority of the local Congress. He emphasized that the decision is not intended to foster confrontation or resentment, highlighting the multicultural diversity of the Puebla region.
