President Siljanovska-Davkova calls for equal EU treatment for North Macedonia
North Macedonian President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova has called for substantive dialogue and equal treatment for her country within the European Union enlargement process. Speaking at a Euronews-organized summit in Brussels, she emphasized that North Macedonia should be subject to the same rules and standards as other candidate countries, including equal participation in preparations for accession negotiations.
Siljanovska-Davkova noted that while both Slovenia and North Macedonia met the conditions for international recognition according to a 1992 Badinter Commission opinion, their European paths have diverged significantly over three decades. She suggested this discrepancy reflects a lack of political will among certain neighbors.
Regarding constitutional amendments, the President stated that following the 2018 Prespa Agreement, citizens were led to believe that changing the country's constitutional name was the final obstacle to integration. She argued that new demands for constitutional changes do not guarantee progress and maintained that such decisions rest with the Assembly, whose legitimacy derives from the citizens.
To advance the process, she proposed gradual integration through access to the single market, digitalization, and involvement in other European policies. She also asserted that the country possesses the capacity for progress in the rule of law, justice, and anti-corruption, provided there is both domestic political will and EU support.
