President Simons attends Ramlila week in Saramacca

The Ramlila week has commenced in Groningen, Saramacca, featuring the ancient religious and cultural tradition of open-air theater based on the Hindu epic, the Ramayana. The event, which runs until Saturday, depicts the story of Prince Rama liberating his wife Sita from Ravan, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.

President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons attended the opening ceremony, emphasizing the event's educational value. She noted that Ramlila provides an opportunity for Surinamese citizens to better understand the diverse cultures, values, and lifestyles within the country through themes of love, struggle, and friendship.

Sarwan Ramai, secretary of the Ramlila Committee Saramacca, highlighted the necessity of unity and respect for societal progress. The week will conclude with the traditional burning of Ravan, which organizers intend to serve as a symbol for leaving behind the problems of Saramacca and the nation of Suriname.
