Nigeria's President Tinubu extends European vacation
President Bola Tinubu has extended his working vacation in Europe and is expected to return to Nigeria this weekend. Having departed on August 30, the President spent time in London and Paris, where he met with French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bolloré.
While the President is abroad, the Presidency maintains that he continues to direct national affairs. This includes his recent order for an independent panel to investigate the deaths of 37 illegal miners in Minna. Vice President Kashim Shettima is representing Nigeria at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, while Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume handles other official presidential duties.
The extension has sparked political debate. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has questioned the constitutional legality of the President's absence, specifically citing Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution. Abubakar argued that the Presidency must clarify who is exercising presidential authority and whether a formal written declaration was transmitted to the Senate President and the Speaker to allow the Vice President to serve as Acting President.
The Presidency dismissed these concerns and criticisms as “irresponsible” and “baseless,” asserting that the President's authority is not limited by his physical location.
