President Trump nominates FCC lawyer Danielle Thumann as commissioner

President Donald Trump nominated Danielle Thumann, a senior counsel to FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, to fill a vacant seat on the five‑member Federal Communications Commission. Thumann, who rejoined Carr’s office in August 2024 after a stint at Crown Castle, previously served as a legal adviser in the commission from March 2021 to July 2023. If confirmed, the appointment would give Republicans a 3‑1 majority on the FCC, shaping decisions on broadband deployment, media ownership, spectrum policy and consumer protection. The nomination aligns with the Trump administration’s broader effort to steer the FCC toward a more aggressive regulatory stance, including ongoing debates over the national TV‑ownership cap and early reviews of broadcast licenses.

The FCC’s rulings affect broadcasters, wireless carriers, satellite firms and equipment makers, making the composition of the commission a key factor in future communications policy.
