President William Ruto issues 5,000 title deeds in Mombasa

President William Ruto has launched the second phase of a national land titling programme during a development tour of the Kenyan Coast. In Mombasa, the initiative resulted in the issuance of 5,000 title deeds to residents from the Dongo Kundu, Waitiki, Mwakirunge, Mikindani, and Mafisini settlement schemes.

The broader programme aims to issue 300,000 title deeds across the counties of Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu, Taita Taveta, and Tana River, as part of a wider government target of 500,000 land ownership documents. The initiative is designed to address historical land injustices and provide formal documentation to communities that have faced long-term uncertainty regarding land ownership.

Local politician and Nyali parliamentary aspirant Said Abdalla expressed support for the move, noting that formal titles could allow families to use their land as collateral to access financing for businesses and development. Abdalla also called for the government to enforce directives against absentee landlords and land grabbers to protect vulnerable residents from eviction.
