Presidential Commission evaluates 58,000 buildings after earthquakes

The Presidential Commission for the Evaluation of Infrastructure Habitability has conducted 58,219 inspections of buildings and homes following the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes on June 24. Of these, 34,115 structures received a green label (59%), 13,537 received a yellow label (23%), and 10,567 received a red label (18%).

Francisco Garcés, president of the Commission, stated that authorities expect to exceed 60,000 total inspections. Buildings with red or yellow labels indicating structural damage must submit repair projects to the Mayor's Office and the Commission for approval. These projects must follow Venezuelan technical standards and guidelines.

While red labels indicate structural or non-structural damage that limits access, Garcés noted that very few buildings will require demolition. The process is moving into second and third phases, which involve certifying the state of structures and determining specific repair methods. Currently, 3,122 inspectors are deployed to carry out these evaluations.
