Presidents Ruto and Tinubu Commend Kenya and Nigeria After Commonwealth Games Success

President William Ruto praised Team Kenya for securing 12 medals – three gold, four silver and five bronze – at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, placing the nation 12th overall. He highlighted gold‑medal performances by Edmund Serem (men's 3,000 m steeplechase), Mathew Kipchumba Kipsang (men's 5,000 m) and Faith Cherotich (women's 3,000 m steeplechase, record‑setting), and thanked all athletes for flying the Kenyan flag high.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu congratulated Team Nigeria for a haul of 24 medals – ten gold, seven silver and seven bronze – at the same Games. He lauded the athletes’ resilience and discipline, noted the experience gained for future competitions, and pledged continued investment in sports development, training facilities and institutional support.

Both leaders used the occasion to underscore national pride and to encourage athletes to maintain focus on future excellence on the continental and global stage.
