Prespa Lakes region seeks joint UNESCO World Heritage status

Albania, Greece, and North Macedonia have officially launched a joint candidacy to include the Prespa Lakes region on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The ministers of culture from the three nations signed a joint declaration in the Municipality of Prespa to promote the protection, sustainable management, and development of the transboundary area.

The initiative aims to highlight the region's unique biodiversity and cultural heritage, which has historical continuity dating back to the 6th millennium BCE. The European Union is supporting the process with 2 million euros to fund a feasibility study required for the tripartite application.

Beyond the UNESCO bid, the cooperation includes the EU-funded ACT4PRESPA project, which focuses on conservation and digitalization. Regional efforts also include developing joint tourist itineraries, research missions, and cultural exchanges to benefit local communities and promote sustainable tourism.
