Prespa region targeted for joint UNESCO World Heritage nomination
Following a meeting between the culture ministers of Albania, Greece, and North Macedonia, the transboundary network PrespaNet has welcomed an initiative to explore a joint nomination for the Prespa region to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The proposal seeks to recognize the area as a mixed natural and cultural heritage site.
PrespaNet suggests that UNESCO recognition could bring significant benefits to the region, including increased international visibility, greater political support for environmental conservation, and access to specialized expertise and resources. For local communities, the designation could foster sustainable nature and cultural tourism, while strengthening social ties between the three neighboring countries.
The preparatory process itself is viewed as a valuable opportunity to align conservation priorities and establish an effective joint management system, potentially building trust and improving cross-border cooperation among the participating nations.
