Press freedom declines globally as journalists face increasing threats
On World News Day, more than 800 press organizations globally are highlighting the importance of reliable, verified journalism amid increasing threats to the profession.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) reports a continuous decline in press freedom since 2022, noting that more than half of the world's countries are in a ‘difficult’ or ‘very serious’ situation regarding media liberty. Gaza is identified as the most dangerous territory for journalists.
The 2026 RSF World Press Freedom Index also highlights a significant drop in the United States' ranking, falling from 57th to 64th place. This decline follows actions by Donald Trump, who recently banned media outlets including CNN, MS Now, and Politico from the White House, though they were later permitted to reintegrate following legal proceedings.
