Preston Davey murder results in life sentence for killer Jamie Varley

Thirteen‑month‑old Preston Davey was killed after severe abuse by Jamie Varley, a former teacher and head of year who had worked in fostering. A seven‑week trial in Preston Crown Court resulted in Varley being found guilty of murder, GBH, sexual assault, cruelty and indecent image offences, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

The case has highlighted failures in the child‑protection system. Foster carer Sandra Cooper, who cared for Preston from birth, reported that her concerns about his welfare were dismissed after he left her care. Commentary in Australian media argued that even robust adoption assessments cannot guarantee that dangerous individuals are identified, pointing to the need for tighter regulation and safeguards.

Preston's parents and birth family expressed profound grief, describing the breach of trust and the system's failure to keep their child safe.
