Alberta delays school flag restrictions and anthem mandate
The Alberta government has announced a delay in implementing several new education policies originally scheduled for September 1. The postponed measures include restrictions on which flags can be displayed in schools, a mandate to play the national anthem weekly, and a provision granting the education minister the authority to name or rename public schools.
Despite these delays, other components of the provincial bill will proceed in September. These include a new student code of conduct prohibiting violence, a requirement for teachers to present subject matter neutrally, and a prohibition on school boards issuing statements on political or social issues. The provincial teachers’ union has criticized the neutrality requirement, calling it “offensive.”
Separately, Preston Manning and former B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell will co-chair the Alberta and the West Assembly. This project will host two virtual forums on September 19 and 20 to discuss western Canadian grievances and various options regarding Alberta's future within the Canadian federation. The forums serve as an educational precursor to Alberta’s October 19 referendum, which includes questions regarding provincial separation.
