Preston's Miller Arcade slated for apartment conversion

Preston City Council planning officers have recommended approval for a scheme to convert the upper floors of the Grade II‑listed Miller Arcade into 46 residential units. The proposal by Darwen‑based Icon Heritage Limited includes 24 one‑bedroom flats, 18 two‑bedroom flats and four studio apartments, plus shared amenities such as a gym, library, cinema, lounge, kitchen, meeting room and workspace.

The historic Victorian Baroque arcade, opened in 1899 and modelled on London’s Burlington Arcade, will retain its ground‑floor retail and leisure spaces. External works will involve window and masonry repairs, a new insulated roof and refurbishment of the glazed vaulted roof, which officials say will improve the building’s condition and preserve the character of the Market Place Conservation Area. No objections have been recorded from consulted organisations or the public, and the council is set to vote next week.
