Preveli Palm Forest in Crete faces recovery after major wildfires

The rare Preveli palm forest in Crete has suffered its most significant destruction since 2010 following intense wildfires in the southern Rethymno region late last July. The fire heavily impacted the palms located at the river mouth, which constitute the majority of the forest.

Despite the damage, botanist Eleftheria Antaloudaki from the Crete Natural History Museum expresses optimism regarding the ecosystem's recovery. She notes that the Theophrastus palm is a resilient plant capable of regenerating if its central core remains unburned, as it retains significant water reserves. Natural restoration could potentially occur within two to three years.

Crucially, a portion of the forest remained untouched as the fire did not reach the palms deeper within the gorge. This surviving section provides a vital foundation for regrowth. This ecosystem is unique in Europe, found only in Crete and the Canary Islands, prompting the Crete Natural History Museum to partner with Canary Island institutions in a European program dedicated to the preservation of the species.
