Preventive dental care essential for managing gum disease and systemic health

Preventive dental care is critical for long-term oral health, yet many individuals engage with dental services reactively rather than proactively. According to 2022 CDC oral health surveillance data, nearly half of American adults aged 30 and older show signs of gum disease. This condition is largely preventable through consistent professional and at-home care.

Gum recession, or gingival recession, is a common issue where gum tissue pulls back to expose the tooth root, increasing sensitivity and the risk of decay or tooth loss. Causes include aggressive brushing, periodontal disease, genetics, poor oral hygiene, and tobacco use.

Research indicates strong oral-systemic connections, linking periodontal disease to increased cardiovascular risk, poorly controlled diabetes, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Moving from reactive treatments, such as extractions and implants, to proactive prevention can mitigate these systemic health risks.
