PRI delegate warns of monstrous 21.5 trillion peso debt in Mexico

José Olvera Acevedo, the PRI national executive committee delegate in Zacatecas, has criticized the proposed 2027 Federal Expenditure Project (PEF), warning it could lead to a “monstrous” public debt exceeding 21.5 trillion pesos. Olvera stated that this level of debt could compromise future generations of Mexicans and reduce the country's capacity for productive investment, as interest payments could exceed 60 percent of the GDP. He warned that such fiscal instability might lead to a loss of investment grade, subsequently increasing interest rates for mortgages and auto loans.

While Olvera noted that social welfare programs are beneficial, he characterized them as “electoreros” (voter-seeking) and called on the Morena party to clarify the specific allocations for these programs in 2027. He also noted that President Claudia Sheinbaum is requesting approximately 1.7 trillion pesos in additional debt for that year.

Beyond national fiscal concerns, Olvera provided a critical assessment of the state of Zacatecas, arguing that despite official government reports, the region faces significant challenges in education, agriculture, health, and security. He specifically highlighted the lack of solutions for local producers, water supply issues following the cancellation of the Milpillas Project, and the need for strategic infrastructure like the Zacatecas-Aguascalientes highway to stimulate economic growth.
