Mexico Chamber of Deputies tightens security after PRI-MC confrontation

The Mexican Chamber of Deputies has announced stricter access controls following a violent altercation between legislators from the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and Movimiento Ciudadano (MC). The incident occurred on October 20, when PRI deputies, including Carlos Gutiérrez Mancilla and Xitlalic Ceja, reportedly poured dirty water over the MC party emblem in their offices and confronted MC national leader Jorge Álvarez Máynez.

During the confrontation, Gutiérrez Mancilla allegedly pursued Máynez, shouting accusations regarding the water quality crisis in Jalisco. In response to the unrest, the Chamber's Board of Directors and the Political Coordination Board announced new security protocols, including a ban on armed escorts and a requirement that all entrants be properly accredited with parliamentary badges.

Movimiento Ciudadano has filed a formal complaint with the Ethics Committee, seeking administrative sanctions and criminal investigations for potential offenses such as attempted homicide and property damage. The Ethics Committee is reviewing the case to determine appropriate penalties, which may include reprimands, removal from legislative positions, or salary deductions. Meanwhile, the Morena party has proposed implementing anti-doping and psychometric testing for legislators to prevent similar behavioral issues.
